Lvqing Eco Toilets

Wang Shasha and Marieke Reichwein started their co-operation in 2011 developing solutions for sanitation in the countryside and mountains in northern China.

The purpose is not only to save water, but also to prevent pollution of water resources by pushing back the introduction of water flushing toilets, which do not take appropriate waste management into consideration. This preserves the traditional methods of composting.

The practice of composting has a history of thousands of years and it has been vital in keeping the soil fertile, especially in harsh climates such as in northern China. It has proven to be a perfect ecologically sustainable practice. We aim to keep the cycle of soil, produce and people intact.

Moreover, Lvqing Eco Toilets do not depend on a sewage infrastructure.

So far, we have four projects for public toilets and about a dozen outhouses for private households who opted for this waterless ecological solution in the provinces of Gansu and Hebei. The next steps include further developing sewage recycling technologies.

Out-of-the-box thinking, creativity and innovation are our drivers.

OBJECTIVE

To have Eco Toilets as a viable option for building modular toilets at any location while protecting water resources.

MISSION

To promote creative and practical solutions for small-scale sanitation facilities in the countryside, making use of improved dry-pit technology.

PLANS

To realise two or three Eco Toilets per year, in particular in areas with scarce water resources.

We need your ideas !

Lvqing Eco Toilets is an ongoing project. We invite every artist, designer, activist, inventor, technician, academic, all of you to participate and contribute to the Eco Toilets.

Every year we will select an outstanding contribution and promote this on World Toilet Day, November 19.
