This is a public toilet at the market of Sanggang. The layout of the old toilet was adjusted and the pits were redone. This toilet sets a model for a dry-pit waste management.
The Arthouse Toilet is spacious, well ventilated and easy to use.
The make-over process has five main steps:
1. Designing the ideal lay-out based on the number of visitors and their behaviour
2. Clearing out and widening the old pits
3. Building with local waste and unused materials
3. Arranging for ash or other dry materials to be used for composting
4. Decorating with art to inspire and plants to represent nature.
The Arthouse uses the traditional way of composting human waste. Instead of flushing the toilet, dry natural materials are used to cover the waste to absorb the smell and promote the composting. This public toilet in Sanggang is equipped with two compartiments, one for women and one for men.
