Gansu Province in western China has cold winters and hot summers. There is little rainfall in the eastern part and the loess is too porous to retain it.
The village of Shijiezi is an open-air museum of arts. Different forms of visual art are to be explored on foot by the visitors. The greenhouse toilet is presented as a public art space to facilitate the many visitors.
The Greenhouse Toilet consists of four main modules:
1. Foundation
2. Frame
3. Genderneutral toilet and urinal
4. Composting bags.
The greenhouse was chosen to ensure a comfortable temperature during the winter to enable the composting of the human waste. Instead of flushing the toilet, dry natural materials are used to cover the waste to absorb the smell and promote the composting. The public toilet in Shijiezi is equipped with a genderneutral urinal and a sitting toilet to divide the solids and liquids.
